Guernsey a highlight for many on tour

REGARDING the headline ‘Tourists need alternative to visiting by cruise liner’ in Wednesday’s Press (24 April, Open Lines) and a question by Peter Keeling.

He and other readers might be interested to know a new company, the Back Roads Touring Co. Ltd, began with small groups of up to 18 touring the UK and Europe, including Guernsey, Sark and Jersey, in 2014.

Although small in number, every year they have been travelling from London by coach down to the south-west district (Dorset) before they arrive by ferry in Guernsey for a four-night stay, including a day trip to Sark, visiting Les Vauxbelets chapel, a tour of Sausmarez Manor, the German Occupation Museum and other places with lovely scenery we boast about and of interest.

The coach will then go by ferry to Jersey, then St Malo, visiting many interesting French places and staying before they finish their 11-day tour in Chartres.

This will be the sixth season I have given weekly talks from early May to early October and have met mostly New Zealanders, Australians, Canadians, Americans and French, and when I speak to the guides who return within the season they say that Guernsey is rated very highly and many will say on the questionnaire that Guernsey is the highlight of their holiday. The friendliness and scenery rates very highly and long may this continue.

To you all, enjoy Liberation, whatever you do and wherever you are, this is our special day and with the group leaving on 5 May I knew they felt the emotion of how Liberation also affected so many at Liberation 1945.
