LUCKNOW: Four persons were arrested on Friday for allegedly swindling e-commerce giant Amazon India out of Rs 10 lakh by making purchases and returning substandard lookalikes. The originals were then either sold through their own online shopping portal or at a wholesale store in Kanpur.

The four suspects, identified as Lakhan Gupta (29), Devesh Singh (28), Aditya Bajpai (30) and Rohit Singh (27), were nabbed by cyber cell officers from Charbagh railway station following a tip-off.
As many as 34 items, including ceiling fans, table fans, gas stoves and LED bulbs, along with polythene packs and tapes with Amazon printed on them, forged Aadhaar cards and fake SIMs, were found on the quartet.
Cyber law expert ofAmazon India Jitendra Saini lodged an FIR against the gang in the first week of May. Jay Soni, the security prevention team leader of Amazon India (North operations) had conducted the investigation. The e-commerce giant’s seller service in Lucknow, Kanpur, Jalaun, Kalpi and Mathura spotted that many of the returned products were not originals in an internal probe carried out in March. The e-commerce giant had then shared addresses and other details of the suspects, which aided the police operation.
Additional superintendent of police (East) SC Rawat said all the four suspects were natives of Jalaun. Aditya is employed with a professional services company and was an avid online buyer. The gang, he said, made more than 104 online purchases that included high-end dSLR cameras, microwaves and other electronic equipment. They sent product return requests within 24 hours, demanding refund using Amazon’s customer care system.

“Every time, the delivery address was different from the return address, which was often in other cities. The substandard lookalikes were sent to Amazaon and the refund was received in bank accounts,” Rawat said, adding that the gang had been conning the e-commerce giant since 2014.
“The probe also revealed that one of the suspects, Aditya Bajpai, operated as a seller at a shopping portal and received customer orders for high-end electronic goods. The original goods were either dispatched through their own portal. Items like gas stoves and electric wires were also sold at a wholesale store in Kanpur,” said Abhay Mishra, circle officer, Hazratganj.
