Ignore fake news on universities to wear uniform

In the past few days, there has been a photo doing rounds on social media claiming that Education CS Prof George Magoha has ordered university students to wear uniform.

Ureport can authoritatively report that the screenshot is fake since the photo was taken during Magoha’s vetting before he was appointed CS.

On Twitter, the photo drew a myriad of reactions and while some dismissed it as fake news, others were quick to bash the CS for being ‘dictatorial’.

It is quite evident that the post was edited since the font does not match that used by Citizen TV.

Earlier this month The Media Council of Kenya ranked social media as the leading source of fake news at 36 percent followed by radio at 28 percent.

Television, the Internet and newspapers follow at 20, 9 and 7 percent respectively.

MCK, a statutory entity that regulates the media, singled out Radio for airing adverts for land that in some cases never existed, discussing witchcraft, airing lewd and sex-motivated discussions and religious Ads that gave false hope.

Of the social media platforms used to receive news by the surveyed respondents, Facebook and WhatsApp were noted to be the most prominent.

The Survey was conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting on behalf of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in the third week of April 2019.

It says 2,518 respondents from 47 counties were interviewed through Computer Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI).
