Fifteen killed in bus-van smash in Kurnool district

Fifteen people were killed and two critically wounded in a road accident near Veldurthi in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. The dead included 14 people travelling in a mini van and a motorcyclist. The mishap occurred when a private travels bus hit a road divider and collided with a mini van coming in the lane on the other side of the median.

TIRUPATI: Fifteen people were killed and two critically wounded in a road accident near Veldurthi in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. The dead included 14 people travelling in a mini van and a motorcyclist. The mishap occurred when a private travels bus hit a road divider and collided with a mini van coming in the lane on the other side of the median.
The critically injured were a motorcyclist and an occupant of the ill-fated van.

According to Veldurthi police, 15 people, most of them belonging to the same family from Ramapuram village in Vaddepalli mandal of Jogulamba Gadwal district in Telangana, were returning in the van to their native place after attending a matchmaking function in Anantapur on Saturday evening, when the accident occurred.
As the mini van reached the outskirts of Veldurthi and was approaching the Bengaluru-Hyderabad national highway, a speeding bus crashed into it. 13 people died on the spot while two succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.

The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. A few passengers in the private bus were also injured. They were shifted to a government hospital in Kurnool.
According to eyewitnesses, rash driving by the bus driver led to the accident. The bus was proceeding to Bengaluru from Hyderabad. The bus driver lost control while avoiding hitting two motorcyclists. The bus first rammed into the two motorcycles and then hit the road divider. It then toppled over the median and crashed into the van, which was on the opposite lane. One of the motorcyclists died on the spot.

Veldurthi police shifted the injured to hospital. Some of the bodies were trapped inside the mangled van and locals had to struggle to take them out.
Kurnool collector S Satyanarayana and superintendent of police Kaginelli Fakeerappa directed the local police and revenue teams to ensure the best medical care to the injured. A pall of gloom descended on Ramapuram as the news of death of 14 of its residents reached the village.
Post mortem examination will be conducted on Sunday and the bodies will be shifted to Ramapuram, police said. Traffic on NH 44 came to a halt.
