Student of the Year 2 box office collection Day 3: This Tiger Shroff film is doing quite well despite bad reviews.
Tiger Shroff starrer Student of the Year 2 has earned Rs 38.83 crore after three days. SOTY 2 is a sequel to the 2012 Karan Johar directorial Student of the Year which launched the careers of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra.
Directed by Punit Malhotra, the movie also stars debutantes Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted Student of the Year 2’s box office figures on his Twitter account. He wrote, “#StudentOfTheYear2 saw limited growth on Day 2, while the sixth phase of polling [cinemas were shut till evening] + #IPL2019Final [evening onwards] affected its biz on Day 3… Fri 12.06 cr, Sat 14.02 cr, Sun 12.75 cr. Total: âš 38.83 cr. India biz. #SOTY2.”
SOTY 2 faces competition from Avengers: Endgame, which is by far the most successful Hollywood movie in India and has crossed the Rs 300 crore mark.
Student of the Year 2 has not received a positive response from critics. Most of its reviews are negative.
The Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave it one-and-a-half star.
She concluded the review by saying, “The running time is too long for what is, essentially, yet-another-buffed-up-version of âJo Jeeta Wohi Sikanderâ crossed with âKuch Kuch Hota Haiâ. Despite its problems, the 2012 flick had a certain goofiness to it. This class of 2019 is awash with predictable beats, which is to be expected from an underdog story, but that it is so clichĂŠd and stilted, is disappointing: from KJo I expect much more swish and sparkle.”
Journalist Haroon Rashid posted on Twitter, "#SOTY2 is #TigerShroff's second biggest opener in the UK. It made £102,308 and charted at number 12. #Baaghi2 made £167,625 on its opening weekend. Student of the Year in 2012 also made more money (£131,125). Ramadan, IPL final and Premier League climax wouldn't have helped."

"We had so much fun shooting the song. Personally, I have never done a dance number like that. Working with Alia was an amazing experience. Though she is such a big star, she was open and cooperative on set while shooting the song," Tiger Shroff had said in an earlier interview on sharing screen space with Alia Bhatt.
"I was 14 or 15 and remember accompanying my parents to a screening. I wasn't allowed in because it was a 11 pm show. I begged mom to let me in and sat on the floor because there were no seats available. When I saw Alia as Shanaya, I knew this was what I wanted to do too. It was a surreal feeling," Ananya Panday told Mumbai Mirror on making her debut with SOTY 2.
"I've been getting trolls and memes since my first film released. It means nothing to me. But I guess any sort of PR is good PR," said Tiger Shroff on the negative reviews of the movie while talking to PTI.
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan took to Twitter to wish goodluck to the team of Student Of the Year 2. He wrote, "My dear @iTIGERSHROFF , when I see you work , it makes me work harder . I love you and I wish u the best! Good luck team #StudentOfTheYear."

Dharma CEO and producer Apoorva Mehta took to Twitter to wish Punit Malhotra a happy birthday. He wrote, "To the man with a heart of gold and the determination of steel...to the director who makes Dharma 2.0 tick and the torch bearer of the #SOTY franchise. Happy birthday @punitdmalhotra!"
With the release of Bollywood romantic comedy De De Pyaar De and Hollywood actioner John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum next Friday, Karan Johar production Student of the Year 2 has only one week to recover costs.

Film trade analyst Sumit kadel posted on Twitter, "Looks like #SOTY2 wont survive on weekdays, film has registered minimal growth on Sat & Sun. ?38-40 cr weekend on cards, in best case scenario i am expecting ? 75-80 cr Lifetime Collection. Providing its budget & distribution price film needs to collect ? 90 cr for HIT verdict"
"Everybody has their point of view, which is justified. But for us, it is the audiences' reaction that matters the most. I'm happy it's working with the target audience and we made the film for them, so I'm really happy about it," Student of the Year 2 director Punit Malhotra told Firstpost.
In an interview with Firstpost, Tiger Shroff said, "We are just trying to express that it's a commercial fun film. 'Just come and have fun,' that's really our message. It is not something like rocket science cinema. No hard feelings...everybody has their own take so it's fine."
Film trade analysts suggest the Indian Premier League 2019 final and Lok Sabha elections will affect Student of the Year 2's collection on Sunday.
"I am not feeling disappointed, but I am feeling really happy that it has been accepted so well. I think what we envisioned for the film, according to that, we feel lucky and thankful that it has opened so well at the box office. The entire team of SOTY 2 is very happy and I would like to make an appeal to the audience that keep giving us the love that you have been giving us," Tara Sutaria told IANS.
Early estimates put the Day 3 collection of Student of the Year 2 at Rs 12 crore.
