HYDERABAD: The Congress has decided to field Komatireddy Lakshmi Reddy, wife of Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopalreddy, from Nalgonda local authorities constituency, and senior party leader E Venkatram Reddy from Warangal local authorities constituency in the by-polls to three MLC local authorities constituencies.
The state Congress leadership has sent the names to AICC headquarters in Delhi for party president Rahul Gandhi’s approval.
The candidate for Ranga Reddy constituency is likely to be finalised late on Sunday night. Congress ex-MLAs Malreddy Ranga Reddy and T Ram Mohan Reddy are in race for the seat.
The state party leadership had left the selection of candidates to the discretion of the District Congress Committee presidents.
The last date for filing nominations is May 14 and polling to the three MLC seats is on May 31. MPTCs, ZPTCs members and corporators of the three local authorities constituencies will comprise the voters. With neither the TDP, TJS, CPI or the BJP having strong presence in the constituencies, the contest is likely to be a battle between the TRS and the Congress. The TRS won Ranga Reddy and Warangal seats and the Congress emerged victorious in Nalgonda in the elections to the three constituencies in 2016.
However, the political equations have changed a lot since 2016 as a large number of MPTCs and ZPTCs have joined the TRS. As a result, the ruling TRS is now eyeing to win all three seats while the Congress is trying to turn the tables on TRS.
The three MLC seats fell vacant following the resignation by Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy from Nalgonda local authorities constituency after he won from Munugode Assembly segment in the December 2018 elections, the resignation by Patnam Narender Reddy of TRS from Ranga Reddy local authorities constituency following his victory from Kodangal constituency and the resignation of Konda Murali who quit the TRS to join the Congress days ahead of the Assembly elections in December 2018. Whoever wins the by-polls, the term of the MLCs will be up to January 4, 2022.
