Noakhali youth allegedly killed by classmates over cell phone dispute

A dispute over cell phone has left a 19-year-old college student dead in Noakhali's Begumganj Upazila.

Zubayer Hossain, an eleventh-grader at Noakhali Government College, was beaten and stabbed to death at Alipur in the Chowmuhani municipality around 10 pm on Tuesday, said Shahjahan Sheikh, additional superintendent of Police of Begumganj circle. 

Eight alleged attackers were detained by police soon after the incident, he added.

Zubayer, who hailed from Kazirkhil village in Senbag Upazila, lived with his family at their Alipur residence in Begumganj.

"Zubayer had a dispute over a cell phone with his classmate Rakib a few days ago which later boiled over into an altercation," Superintendent Shahjahan said.

In the wake of the incident, Rakib, Ashraf, Jony, Mehrab, Abir and a few other students went to confront Zubayer.

“At one point, they started hitting Zubayer before he was slashed with a a knife."

He was subsequently rushed to the Noakhali General Hospital, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.

A case is going to be filed over the incident, said Additional Superintendent Shahjahan.
