Ruben Loftus-Cheek has spoken out about the injury that will rule the Chelsea star out of the Europa League final and England's Nations League campaign.

The Blues midfielder is expected to miss 12 months of action after suffering a devastating ruptured Achilles injury in Chelsea's friendly against New England Revolution on Wednesday.

Loftus-Cheek said on Twitter: 'Difficult to describe how I am feeling right now. More confusion than sadness.'

'My surgery went well yesterday evening so I'm off to a good start! I'll be watching and supporting from the sidelines for a little while so i wish the boys all the luck in the Europa League final and of course the Nations League finals.

'Coming back strong from an injury is something I've had to do all my life and i'll do it again. See you on the pitch as soon as possible.'

Loftus-Cheek left the Gillette Stadium on crutches with his foot in a protective boot.

He had been on the pitch for only 20 minutes after being introduced as a half-time substitute.

Loftus-Cheek's colleague Callum Hudson-Odoi suffered the same injury last month and is optimistic of returning in time to be involved in pre-season training.

However Hudson-Odoi is understood to have suffered a partial rupture while Loftus-Cheek's was a full rupture — leading to a gloomier outlook and concerns the latter will have a significantly longer spell out of action.

Loftus-Cheek could not put any weight on his left foot and needed the help of two members of the Chelsea staff to leave the pitch after he suffered the injury.
