Bunnell Christ Lutheran to welcome new pastor

The Rev. John Johnson will be installed 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, as the new pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, 2323 N. State St., Unit 112, Bunnell.

Johnson takes over for Pastor Judy Mattson, who officially retires on Friday, May 31.

Johnson was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church before being called to the ministry. He has been attending seminary with the Institute of Lutheran Theology and has completed a one-year internship at Christ Lutheran Church.

Christ Lutheran invites everyone to join them for the installation ceremony to be held during worship. There will be a light luncheon served after the installation service.

Georgia youth choir brings tour to Daytona Beach

The Youth Choir from Oak Grove United Methodist Church of Decatur, Ga., will bring its annual tour to First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach, 620 S. Grandview Ave., Sunday, May 26, performing as part of the 10:30 a.m. service.

The ensemble features 47 singers from grades 6-12 and five adult singers who also serve as mentors. Its repertoire includes all styles of literature, and each year they choose a genre of music to perform during the season – this year it’s music from the Shaker tradition. The Youth Choir’s current tour is titled “Cantemus,” which is Latin for “sing.”

Trinity UMC children to present ‘Soul on Fire’ musical

Trinity United Methodist Church, 306 W. Wisconsin Ave., DeLand, will present the Music Makers Children’s Community Choir “Soul on Fire” musical at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday, May 19.

The children have been rehearsing for weeks in anticipation of getting the congregtion “all fired up!”

St. Jude’s Episcopal plans VBS

Vacation Bible School registration has begun at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 815 E. Graves Ave., Orange City. VBS will be held at the church from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 10-14. Registration is free at stjudescentralflorida.org. For information, call 386-775-6200.

Daytona Beach Lifetree Café

Possible responses to illegal immigration will be discussed 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at Lifetree Café, 142 Fairview Ave., Daytona Beach. This program, titled, "An Immigrant in the Sanctuary: When Faith and Politics Collide," features a filmed interview with Rev. Mike Morran, whose church offered sanctuary to Arturo Hernandez Garcia, an undocumented immigrant. Garcia moved into the church basement knowing he faced immediate deportation should he leave the church building.

"Arturo has worked in the U.S. for over 15 years, and his wife and two daughters are here," Morran said of Garcia. "There are a lot of good reasons this man should be able to stay with his family."

At this Lifetree episode, participants will have the opportunity to share their views concerning illegal immigration, immigration reform and responding to undocumented immigrants.

Lifetree Cafe is where people gather to discuss life and faith in a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental coffee-house setting.

Trinity UMC begins VBS signups

Registration has begun for the June 24-28 Vacation Bible School at Trinity United Methodist Church, 306 W. Wisconsin Ave., DeLand. VBS is planned from 9 a.m. to noon for children 5 years old to fifth-grade. To register or information, call the church at 386-734-4425.

DeLand Lifetree Café

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1401 W. New York Ave., DeLand sponsors Lifetree Cafe in three locations in the city for 1 hour each. The public is welcomed. Topics are always relevant and encourage conversation while examining challenges facing our society today.

The topic for the week of May 20 is "An Immigrant in the Sanctuary; When Faith and Politics Collide."
