Pune airport on high alert after recovery of maps, sketch
The seized documents were found near the baggage pickup area
PUNE: A high alert has been sounded at the city airport after some sensitive documents were recovered from its premises on May 6.
According to sources, the seized documents comprised maps and a sketch, believed to be of the airport.
“The CISF personnel are on an alert. Random frisking and luggage checks are being carried out. The matter has been communicated to police and the AAI (Airports Authority of India) headquarters.
The security agencies have started an investigation,” a source in the airport said.
Confirming the development, an airport official said, “An alert has been sounded for the airport, but it is being ensured that passengers do not face inconvenience for it. The security agencies are ensuring proper vigil outside the airport, too. The airline representatives have been told to stay alert during the check-in baggage scanning and look for suspicious passengers.”
All officials, including senior CISF personnel in Delhi, were tight-lipped about the matter. Sources claimed that the seized documents had accidentally fallen from a bag (hand baggage) of a passenger and an official of an airline found them.
“They were found near the baggage pickup area and were given to the senior airport officials. There were some maps and a sketch. There is haze on whether the map and the sketch were of the
Pune airport or of a different facility. The airport is providing all assistance to the police and the local intelligence bureau. The CCTV footage of that day have been provided to them,” another source said.
The Pune airport is a defence facility. The CISF has put it under the hyper-sensitive bracket.
High alert was sounded at Pune airport, besides Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus depots, in February in the wake of the terror strike in Kashmir and the recovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) from a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus then.
