A motorist was stabbed in a terrifying carjacking incident at a Birmingham car park.

The man was knifed in the leg in the shocking attack in Yardley .

It happened in the car park of the The Swan Shopping Centre in Church Road at around 10.20pm on Saturday, May 18.

He was approached by a group of men as he sat in his black Nissan Qashqai.

They demanded he hand over the keys to his car - and then pulled him out before stabbing him in the leg and making off in his vehicle.

The man, who is in his 50s, was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

West Midlands Police and forensic investigators erect a blue tent and place a large cordon in the car park of The Swan Shopping Centre , Church Road , Yardley , Birmingham.

A night security guard from the centre tended to the victim.

He told BirminghamLive it was a horrific scene.

"I was covered in blood helping him," he said.

Police and ambulance crews went to the scene and the road and car park was closed off until around 3am on Sunday.

West Midlands Police are reviewing CCTV and appealing for witnesses.

"Police are investigating after a man was stabbed following a carjacking at The Swan Centre, Chruch Road, Birmingham at 10.20pm last night (18 May).

"A man in his 50s was in his car, a black Nissan Qashqai, when he was approached by a group of men demanding the keys. They then pulled him out before stabbing him in the leg and making off in his car.

"The man was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

"CCTV is being reviewed and investigations are ongoing."
