A motorist was stabbed in the leg during a terrifying carjacking incident at a Birmingham car park.

The incident happened in the car park of the The Swan Shopping Centre, Yardley, at around 10.20pm on Saturday, May 18.

A group of men approached the driver as he sat in his black Nissan Qashqai, BirminghamLive reported.

They demanded he hand over the keys to his car before stabbing him in the leg and making off in his vehicle.

The man, who is in his 50s, was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

A night security guard from the centre tended to the victim and described the scene as 'horrifying.'

"I was covered in blood helping him," he said.

Police and ambulance crews went to the scene and the road and car park was closed off until around 3am on Sunday.

West Midlands Police  are reviewing CCTV and appealing for witnesses.

"Police are investigating after a man was stabbed following a carjacking at The Swan Centre, Chruch Road, Birmingham at 10.20pm last night (18 May).

"A man in his 50s was in his car, a black Nissan Qashqai, when he was approached by a group of men demanding the keys. They then pulled him out before stabbing him in the leg and making off in his car.

"The man was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

"CCTV is being reviewed and investigations are ongoing."
