Billy Joe Saunders has become the latest world champion to call out Liverpool's WBA super-middleweight king Callum Smith, after winning the WBO version of the 12 stone belt on Saturday night.

Saunders became a two-weight world champion when he won the vacant WBO super-middleweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Shefat Isufi at the Lamex Stadium in Stevenage.

Having stepped up from middleweight, he eased to scores of 120-108, 117-111 and 118-110 from the three ringside judges.

Asked what was next, Saunders said: "Every time I'm asked who I want it never happens.

"But I really hope we can make the (Callum) Smith fight. It would be a brilliant fight for the fans, a fantastic fight. I wouldn't even mind going to Manchester but I know he's probably got other plans.

"He's fighting in June so I don't think the dates will stack up for us. But I love that fight and I think Smith has got the balls to fight."

After Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez beat Rocky Fielding in his debut at super-middleweight in December there was talk of Canelo facing Callum next, possibly at Wembley.

But nothing materialised.

Callum himself tweeted: "Had a lot of tweets over the last couple of days regarding Canelo. If his team are serious and want to make the fight then I’m game! A big fight in the autumn sounds good to me."

Smith has not boxed since he ended George Groves' career last September in Jeddah to win the WBA world title and win the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight event.

He is listed to fight on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's heavyweight title defence with Andy Ruiz junior in Madison Square Garden on June 1.

An opponent has still not been named but it is likely to be former middleweight titlist Hassan N’Dam N'Jikam.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn told ESPN on Tuesday: “It’s very close.

“We’re probably 24, 48 hours away from it being finalized.”

N’Dam is coming off a solid win over Martin Murray in December, but would be moving up in weight.

He was on the short list to for a June 8 fight with former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at 164 pounds before GGG opted for Steve Rolls.
