Medical call at north Raleigh apartment ends with officer shooting armed man

According to police, the Raleigh Fire Department responded to a medical call at 5210 Falls of Neuse Road, in the Quail Ridge Apartments complex, at about 9:15 a.m.

First responders encountered a man who made verbally threatening statements, police said, so they "backed away and waited for police officers to arrive."

"Let PD know that we witnessed two guns," first responders called in to the fire department's dispatch.

Police said that, when the first officer arrived at the scene, the man approached him with a firearm in his hand.

According to police, the officer took cover behind a patrol vehicle and gave the man commands to drop the gun. When the man refused, the officer fired one shot, striking the man.

"One shot fired," firefighters on the scene radioed to dispatch. "Battalion 5, letting you know that EMS and fire have moved a block away. Everybody's safe on our end."

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was taken into custody and transported to WakeMed. His condition was unknown Sunday evening.

Resident Fnu Hameedullah said he was in bed when he heard one gunshot, but he said he didn't realize it was gunfire at the time.

"I'm living in this area for a year. This is the first time I heard the shot sound. Before, I never see something like that," Hameedullah said.

At one point, more than a dozen police cars were at the scene, and crime scene tape surrounded the area.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Wake County District Attorney's Office were notified, and the SBI is investigating.

The officer's body-worn camera recorded the incident, according to Raleigh police.

Under the new policy, body cameras are always recording video without audio, even if an officer doesn't manually activate it.

Police are expected to release the preliminary findings of their investigation into Sunday's shooting by the end of the week.
