Chris Sutton has said Jose Mourinho was offered the chance to become Celtic's new manager.

The SPL champions are on the look-out for a permanent replacement for Brendan Rodgers, who left the Glasgow club in February to take charge at Leicester.

Neil Lennon returned to Celtic on an interim basis following Rodgers' departure but the club are yet to appoint somebody to fill the role on a full-time basis.

Reports circulated last month that former Manchester United manager Mourinho was in the running to return to management with Celtic and Sutton has now as good as confirmed an offer was tabled.

“There’s going to be a lot of managers in for it (the Celtic manager's job)," Sutton said. “Mourinho was heavily linked and I’m led to believe that there was something in that in terms of there being an offer.

“But why would he take the Celtic job? I just don’t get it. I don’t know the exact terms but there was an offer.”

Meanwhile, former United defender Paul Parker has criticised Mourinho over the way he carried himself during his time at Old Trafford.

“He's probably never going to be a 'nice guy' like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is, but some people in football are too scared to talk about him for fear of the consequences,” Parker told  Eurosport.

“Mourinho never smiled, which doesn't make any sense. He should have been happy - he was in a job that he'd always wanted, one of the most prestigious jobs in the world at one of the biggest clubs. He was acting like he was at Carlisle United, not Manchester United."
