Farmers of Papanasam taluk cultivating sugarcane for two private sugar mills in Thanjavur district lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, S. S. Mahendran, on Monday seeking criminal action against the mill managements and the employees of a certain nationalised banks for cheating the farmers.

In their memorandum, the ryots alleged that the private sugar mill managements had obtained the signatures of farmers in some applications while they registered their canes for these mills a few years ago. Later these forms were submitted at some of the nationalised banks in Kumbakonam by the mill managements to obtain loans to the tune of ₹360 crore.

Recently, the farmers have started receiving legal notices from the banks directing them to ‘repay the loan’. Stating that the private sugar mill managements in connivance with the bank authorities have cheated the ryots, the petitioners sought criminal action against the mill managements and the bank employees as taken by the Economic Offences Wing police, Cuddalore district, recently on a similar petition forwarded by the sugarcane growers in Cuddalore district.
