The only look that did nothing for me was Kristen Stewart and the floppy orange and blonde colour, but to each his own.

Camp or not, the dramatic hair colours at the Met Gala were eye-catchy. From Kylie’s head-turning lilac to Lucy Boynton’s dusty blue, from Minaj’s candy pink to Sabrina’s metallic pink, rainbow colours were all the rage on this big night. It seemed like hair took a life of its own that evening with celebrities channelling their inner magic through over-the-top hair (real or wigs). Laverne Cox matched her blue eye shadow to her blue hair, Regina Hall wore pink hair that matched her pink accent sleeves, big bold hair-colour transformation seemed to be a consistent trend.

Bengaluru’s local hair colour expert Naina Gunjikar spent days obsessing over Met looks. She shares,  “The gala gave us endless entertainment and a unique insight into the kookiest parts of people’s minds. It was refreshing to see celebrities tap into their weird sides. The Jenner/Kardashian clan stole the show. Kris’s blonde bob and Kim in a waterfall of shimmery silver and blue were stunning.  Lucy Boynton and her smokey blue faerie’ do was my favourite. The only look that did nothing for me was Kristen Stewart and the floppy orange and blonde colour, but to each his own.”

What makes people opt for such dramatic hair colours? She has clients from all walks of life, “the only thing common between them is the appreciation of colour. Some want a change of look, others are peacocking. Many express their individuality by matching their hair with their soul.  Individuality is a trend. Everyone wants to look and feel special and that’s what I give them,” she says.

There are enough colours in the rainbow to go around. Graphic Designer Ridhii Paul is one such to march to the beats of her own drum. She has been colouring her hair since she was 15 and has taken the colour wheel for a whirl. “I’ve had almost all colours of the rainbow.” Her hair is a canvas. It’s a way of expression. “Hues of pink and purple with a bit of orange is my favourite go to. I pick colours based on how I’m feeling at that moment.” shares Ridhii. She adds, “What we saw in this year’s Met Gala definitely met the ‘camp’ theme. The retro hairstyles with big, voluminous and high ponytail styles always look great on the red carpet.”

Hair colour is a visual way to express your philosophies and alignment. You can make the statement you want.  Some colours have a light-hearted appeal while others are intriguing and deep.  Colours like purple exude a creative and rebellious vibe, orange feels like these people will speak their minds. The celebrities went all out with gorgeously vivid colours and if you ever think of copying the looks,

Yogesh Kumar, creative director at a city’s blow dry salon has tips, “The bright candy colours always compliment any kinds of skin tones. The most stunning hairs of the Met Gala were inspired by themes of ocean, environment and birds. Closer to home we can adopt most of these retro-inspired fashion statements. Bollywood and retro always go well together and this year’s Gala had a lot of inspiration for us to learn and adopt from.”
