The Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) have confirmed the death of referee Victor Hugo Hurtado Ogeda following a top-flight match held at high altitude in the country.

Hurtado, 31, collapsed during the 47th minute of Sunday's meeting between Always Ready and Oriente Petrolero at El Alto's Municipal Stadium - one of the highest in the world at approximately 3,900m (12,795ft) above sea level.

Per the BBC, Always Ready team doctor Eric Kosziner later informed the media that Hurtado had suffered an initial heart attack before a second upon arrival at hospital proved to be fatal.

"The Bolivian Football Federation regrets to report the death of the first category referee, Mr. Victor Hugo Hurtado Ogeda, for causes not yet determined," read an FBF statement.

"The referee was leading the match between Always Ready and Oriente Petrolero. The FBF expresses to the family of the professional, their solidarity and support in this moment of pain.

"In time to make known his deep regret, the FBF decrees mourning in national football for seven days."

In a Tweet, Bolivian president Evo Morales said: "We regret the passing of referee Victor Hugo Hurtado.

"We send our condolences and solidarity to your family, friends and colleagues. Bolivian football is in mourning."
