6 arrested for observing Nathuram Godse birth anniversary in Gujarat
SURAT: Adding to the acrimony over Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse, members of right-wing outfit Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) celebrated his birth anniversary in a temple in Surat on Sunday night, prompting the state government to direct stern action against them.
On Monday, police arrested six members of the outfit who had organised the celebration at Suryamukhi Hanuman temple in Limbayat.
They garlanded Godse’s photograph, lit lamps and distributed ladoos among other devotees who had gathered at the temple.
“Following directives of the state government, we lodged the offence and arrested six people. We will take strict actions against anyone who tries to vitiate peace by organising events to honour the assassin of hatma Gandhi,” Satish Sharma, Surat police commissioner, said.
Minister of state for home, Pradeepsinh Jadeja, said, “Our government will not tolerate any such action that hurts people’s sentiments or leads to unrest and spreads hatred in the society.”
