Your Bali travels are going to turn expensive with the implementation of the new tourist tax. As per the news reports, Bali Governor Wayon Koster said that tourists should also help contribute and conserve the island.

The tax to be imposed is likely to be around 10 dollars, which converts to INR 698, which is expected to generate around millions for the government. Authorities are planning to impose this tax to tackle the waste management issue, which as per the Bali Environment Agency is around 3500 tonnes a day. In short, the tax has been proposed in light of the region’s continuing battle against plastic waste that pollutes surrounding waters and beaches.

Governor Koster, referring to this development, said that Bali must serve as an example in the implementation of such a regulation, which will inevitably turn to be beneficial to both the tourists and region.

This popular tourist destination had already banned single-use plastics in 2018, such as plastic straws, shopping bags and styrofoam straws.
Further, Governor Koster remains optimistic that the visitor tax will not hamper the visitor numbers. He is of the view that tourists will understand and will be happy to pay it; the money will be used to save the environment. He also mentioned that the said tax would be applicable to only international tourist. The method of how the tax will be collected has not been confirmed yet; it might likely be to an airline ticket price or the visitors might have to pay on arrival at the airport.
