Humans will have to become Martians to survive when the Earth’s resources run out, claims Professor Brian Cox.
He said building a new life on the Red Planet would be the only option for humanity and a first step to finding other places to live.
‘There is nowhere else that humans can go to begin their step outwards from the planet,’ said the physicist and TV presenter, 51.
Professor Brian Cox was speaking to Radio Times ahead of his new BBC2 five-part series The Planets which starts next Tuesday. He also speculated that space exploration might help to discover other lifeforms in galaxies beyond the Milky Way
‘There may not be Martians now but there will be Martians if we are to have a future. At some point, we will be the Martians.
We can’t stay here for ever. If civilisation continues to grow, we have to find a way of accessing resources that don’t damage our planet.’
But the scientist is not keen on moving to Mars himself, saying: ‘No, it’s horrendous. It’s freezing cold, it’s got very little atmosphere.’
