2 held for stealing valuables in Kothrud, Swargate areas

PUNE: Cash and valuables, worth Rs1.97 lakh, were stolen from five cars parked in Kothrud and Swargate areas on Sunday. The Kothrud police detected one of the five thefts with the arrest of two suspects. The police are probing whether the same duo was involved in other incidents as well. The arrested duo has been identified as Sikandar Shaikh (40) and Kailas Dhade (35), both from Kothrud.

Assistant inspector of Kothrud police, Amol Devkar, told TOI that around 8.30pm on Sunday, suspects Shaikh and Dhade entered the premises of Niranjan Bhusnale’s residential building on Paud Road. They broke the windowpane of his Wagon R and made off with Rs7,000, sarees and display camera, collectively worth Rs 21,500. “After receiving the complaint, we checked the CCTV footage in the area and took the suspects into custody,” Devkar said.
Two more incidents of thefts from cars were reported to the Kothrud police. Unidentified suspects smashed the windows of two cars parked near the Automotive Research Authority of India (ARAI) and made off with debit/credit cards, two cellphones and a gold ring. The thefts occurred between 7am and 7.45am when car owners Bhushan Rewatkar, accompanied by his relative, and Ajinkya Deshpand, along with his two friends, wereout for morning walk on a hillock near ARAI. Devkar said that the police were probing whether suspects Shaikh and Dhade were involved in thefts on the hillock too,” Devkar said.
Two incidents of thefts from two cars were reported from Swargate area. A bag containing gold ornaments, worth Rs1.05 lakh, was stolen from Pornima Shah’s car parked in CPWD colony. Suspects broke open the windowpane of a car parked in the area and stole Rs5,000. Inspector of Swargate police Shabbir Sayyad said that a search has been launched for the suspects.
