KOLKATA: A 24-year-old man walked into the Haridevpur police station early on Sunday — carrying a blood-stained knife — and confessed to have stabbed his mother to death.
The victim was identified as Apu Sarkar (44), a resident of Karunamoyee Ghat Road.
The accused — Chandan Sarkar, a small trader — was arrested. Police said Chandan admitted to have stabbed his mother repeatedly.
According to them, the accused was undergoing treatment at a mental asylum in Jadavpur. His wife left him one and a half years ago and he recently lost his job at a Salt Lake-based media house where he worked as a photojournalist.
“Chandan was arrested based on a complaint lodged by his sister. During initial investigations, he revealed that his mother used to scold him often and even called him mentally unstable. This pained him a lot, especially after his father passed away a few years ago and he was charged with running the family shop,” an investigating officer said.
Early on Sunday, the two yet again quarrelled over Chandan’s unemployment. The argument soon turned sour, after which Chandan picked up a knife and attacking his mother. The police rushed the woman to M R Bangur Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
The police said they were investigating the case further. “We are trying to ascertain the exact reason leading to the murder. We are probing if there was a property angle to the case,” said an investigating officer. The homicide section of detective department is helping the local cops in the probe.
