Pune: Civic body to use CSR funds for building garbage processing units in housing societies
PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned to use corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for setting up garbage processing facilities in bigger societies across the city.
A group of elected members raised the issue of funds crunch in the housing societies for setting up garbage processing plants. These coporators while speaking at the general body meeting on Tuesday said that many older societies cannot afford to build the plants on their own.
They are facing action from PMC. The civic body should look into the matter.
“The civic body will explore the possibility of using the CSR funds. Currently, they are used for a number of works and municipal facilities. We can check if they can be allotted for projects in housing societies. The civic body will also check if the funds given to the corporators can be diverted for setting up garbage processing facilities at housing societies,” said Saurabh Rao, commissioner of PMC, while speaking at the general body.
Any property with more 70 houses or which generates more than 100 kg garbage per day is supposed to have its own processing facility in the premises. They include bigger housing societies, hotels, hospitals, educational institutes and other establishments.
PMC has started filing cases against bulk garbage generators, which don’t have the facility of garbage processing. It charges fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 from them.
