On a recent visit to Singapore I found myself heading to Sentosa. And it wasn't for Universal Studios (give me some credit). I wanted to check out Peroni Sunset Cinema, which was held from May 2-15, to see what all the fuss was about.
Now in its third year, Peroni elevates good cinema to another level. The best recent films are screened on Singapore's most beautiful beach, Tanjong, with one movie a day. The party atmosphere is enhanced with good food and, of course, Peroni refreshments.
You can kick off the evening by sticking your toes in the sand, as I did, and watching the Sun go down. The orange, pink and purple hues are breathtaking, though the views of oil tankers threaten to spoil things somewhat. Then indulge in cold drinks and seaside treats, like massive hot dogs and tacos. There's even a popcorn machine, pumping out fresh kernels out for movie-buffs.
First-timer Aisyah Wesseling said: "I wanted to go last year but tickets were sold out. I definitely intend to make it a yearly thing. It's a unique film experience that has an intimate setting. Not to mention the beautiful location, delicious food and some of Singapore's most beautiful sunsets!"
I couldn't have summed it up better myself. The alfresco vibes, blue and white deck chairs and beach vibes are all Instagram-worthy. The movies only begin once the Sun goes down and then it becomes a sort of silent disco -- everyone has their own pair of headphones.
Having grown up in coastal Bombay, I miss events such as this on the beach. Bangkok is in dire need of something similar. Hint, hint!
For those who missed Peroni Sunset Cinema this time around, there's always next year. What better excuse to spend a few days in the Lion City than at a cinema on the beach?
