Biden responds to Trump on Pennsylvania: 'I've never forgotten where I came from'

Former Vice President Joe Biden pushed back Tuesday against a recent attack from President Donald Trump, who said Biden had "deserted" Pennsylvania.

In an email to supporters, Biden said that his family had to leave the state when he was 10 years old because his father got a job in Delaware so that he "could provide for our family."

"Yesterday, Donald Trump tried to attack me at his campaign rally by saying I abandoned Pennsylvania," Biden wrote in a fundraising email.

"I've never forgotten where I came from," Biden said.

During a rally in Montoursville, Penn., on Monday night, Trump repeatedly called out Biden for leaving "you for another state." The president also told the audience that Biden "didn't take care of" Pennsylvania voters.

Biden served as a Delaware senator for over 30 years but was born in Scranton, Penn.

Biden is making a play for Pennsylvania, which is a state Trump won in 2016 by less than 1 percentage point. Since announcing his presidential bid, Biden held his first rally in Pittsburgh and announced his campaign headquarters will be in Philadelphia.

Trump noted during his rally that he will continue to make Pennsylvania a priority and will campaign in the state often. His comments came after Politico reported that the Trump campaign's internal polling found Biden is ahead of Trump in the critical battleground state.

In addition, since his entry into the 2020 race, Biden has repeatedly been a front-runner in polling about the crowded Democratic field. According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday, 35% of Democratic voters or those who lean Democratic said they would vote for Biden.

In his email, BIden said that Trump's insults are proof that he "doesn’t understand the struggles working folks go through."

He wrote that Trump doesn't understand that after a parent loses their job, "the longest walk a parent can make is up a short flight of stairs to their child’s bedroom to sit on the end of the bed and say, honey, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. We have to move."

He noted that his father "had to make that walk." 

"He doesn’t understand what it’s like to worry you will lose the roof over your head. He doesn’t understand what it’s like to wonder if you’ll be able to put food on the table," Biden wrote of Trump.

"But he was not alone. This story isn’t unique to the Bidens. Too many people around this country have had to make that walk," he added.
