(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, May 22 (KUNA) -- France on Wednesday said it was concerned over reports coming from the United States that the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in the attack it has undertaken in the northwest of the country in the Idlib region.
The State Department claimed the alleged attack using chlorine gas took place on May 19 and Washington warned of a rapid response if the attack is confirmed.
"We note with concern these allegations on which all light must be shed," the French Foreign Ministry said in answer to questions in a briefing.
"We have full confidence in the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)," which is tasked with investigating allegations of this type, spokeswoman Agnes von Der Muhll commented.
As recently as Tuesday, France and Germany, at the highest level, had urged "extreme vigilance on the use of chemical weapons," she indicated.
"France reaffirms its constant position against the use of chemical weapons and that the perpetrators of chemical attacks should be sanctioned," she added.
The spokeswoman also remarked that it was for this reason that France has launched its initiative in January 2018, forming an "international partnership against impunity in the use of chemical weapons," an initiative that Kuwait joined at the Paris conference. (end)
