I went to the garden centres this weekend, hoping to get inspired and they sure weren’t bustling like they usually are over the Victoria Day weekend. I am sure we will get there but it sure has been an unusual spring.

Our thoughts go out to all of those being impacted by local flooding.

It is going to be a busy few weeks at the Capitol Centre. On Friday, Thane Dunn brings his Elvis Rock and Country show to North Bay and remaining seats are very limited. North Bayite Sharron Andreyechen is the promoter bringing this show to the Capitol Centre and she has really done a great job. This is a show she really believes in and promises the ultimate Elvis experience.

This weekend also brings dance, dance, and more dance.. The Dance Expressions spring recital is on Saturday with two shows at 1 and 6 p.m.

BTS Dance holds their spring recital on Sunday at 1 p.m.

It has been a busy May with lots of Sunday bookings so we haven’t been able to have Sunday Cinema until this coming weekend when we will be showing the movie Stockholm. Mark Strong, Noomi Rapace and Ethan Hawke star in this movie about the absurd true story of a 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm.

I am sure we’ve all heard of Stockholm Syndrome and this event is considered the origin of the labelling of this psychological phenomenon where a captive forms a bond with their captor. This comedy was filmed mostly in Hamilton, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was nominated for Canadian Screen Awards in Costume Design, Sound Editing, Editing, Visual Effects, and Cinematography.

Our AGM is scheduled for May 29 and all Stage Door VIPs, Stage Door Members, Capitol Centre members and Kennedy Gallery members are all welcome to attend.

The annual general meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will be held in the upstairs Galaxy Circle Lounge.

If you haven’t already – don’t forget to register your foursome for our 33rd annual Terry’s Golf Classic at Highview June 11. We are so grateful for the longstanding support of arts and culture through this major fundraiser for the Capitol Centre. We couldn’t do it without Casey’s and Rogers as our major event sponsors.

Tickets are on sale for Children’s Festival. We work hard to keep the prices low for this fun family weekend. It is $10 per ticket for the entire weekend and $5 for the Saturday activity day on its own.

All events are within our climate controlled building. We will have Spider Man, Captain Marvel, Stuart the Minion and Mary Poppins on site.

Finally, we are leading up to our official 90 years of operation, which began with opening night on June 1, 1929. I hope you will join us to celebrate, share your stories and experiences, view lots of historic photographs and artifacts, join a building tour (which will include ghost stories) with Andrew Palangio, and take in our screening of the 1929 film, In Old Arizona. It is a free event and is sure to be a great time!
