TORNADO DAMAGE: Three barns were damaged by a tornado May 19 in Barry County.

The only tornado confirmed May 19 in Michigan roared through Barry County and took down three barns owned by Rodney Cruthers, former Maple Grove Township supervisor.

A stave silo nearby and a pickup parked close to the largest barn were undamaged. The tornado's path, which was less than 3 miles, was about 12 miles southeast of Hastings and lasted for only a short time, causing little other damage besides several downed trees and a fabric framed wood storage shed on neighboring properties.

The first sign of tornado damage was about a half-mile southwest of the damaged barns. The tornado exhausted itself near the center of Section 20 of Maple Grove Township, where it crossed Marshall Road, about a half-mile north of Cloverdale Road.
