HUBBALLI: Defeat for Congress in Bagalkot Lok Sabha constituency is a setback for former chief minister Siddaramaiah, who is also heading coordination committee of coalition government.
Union minister Ramesh Jigajinagi is re-elected for the third consecutive term from Vijayapura constituency and has achieved double hat-trick including his three victories at Chikodi. At the other end, Raichur, an older constituency in Hyderabad-Karnataka region has supported BJP for second time.
Though Siddaramaiah was defeated at Chamundeshwari, Badami assembly constituency, which falls under Bagalkot district and Lok Sabha constituency, had helped him to remain in state Assembly last year.
After 2018 assembly election, Siddaramaiah’s visits were increased to Bagalkot. Pinning hopes on him, many aspirants of Congress party itself had dreamt of contesting for Lok Sabha election. However, party high command had fielded Veena Kashappanavar, wife of former minister Vijayanand Kashappanavar. She had also served as Bagalkot ZP president. Seeing her caliber, party had fielded her against BJP’s PC Gaddigoudar. However, Gaddigoudar has retained the constituency for the fourth consecutive term.
Union minister Ramesh Jigajinagi has won the Vijayapura constituency with a margin of 2,58,038 votes. However, Raichur, which had been supporting Congress for a dozen of times in the past 15 elections, has again supported BJP. It had supported BJP’s Sanna Pakirappa in 2019 and now former minister Raja Amareshwara Naik. As the counting was slow in Raichur, BJP candidate was leading with 75,462 votes at 11th round of total 23 rounds.
