Universal is moving forward with their Fear Remake. It has just been revealed that The Hate U Give actress Amandla Stenberg will headline the movie, which originally starred Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. The 1996 movie shows Wahlberg's David and Witherspoon's Nicole starting a new romance. David begins as a charming and affectionate person, but Nicole later sees a much darker side to him as he begins to unravel. The thriller was originally panned by critics, but it became a sleeper hit.

The Fear remake is being written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jonathan Herman. Brian Grazer, who produced the original movie is set to produce again through his Imagine Entertainment banner. Karen Lunder of Imagine Entertainment is also serving as a producer on the remake. Amandla Stenberg was last seen in Fox 2000's drama The Hate U Give, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival to praise from critics. There is no word on who will be taking on the David role in the movie at this time.

At the time of the original Fear's release in 1996, it was described as a Fatal Attraction for teens, which makes sense, though many found the idea of the movie to be inappropriate in the first place. In the 20 years since its premiere, the movie has become a cult hit and it also helped to launch the careers of Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. The movie opened at number four at the box office with $6.4 million and later went on to make $20.8 million during its initial theatrical run.

Fear currently holds a 40% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though fans of the movie would rate it much higher. In a world when reboots and remakes are commonplace, the Fear remake could end up doing pretty well at the box office, especially with horror and thriller movies doing so well. Last year, Amandla Stenberg graced the cover of Time Magazine for their next generation leaders issue. She was also given the Visibility Award by the Human Rights Campaign, so there will be plenty of people who are looking forward to seeing what she does with the Nicole role in the Fear remake.

There is currently no production start date set for the Fear remake, which means there is currently no release date either. With that being said, more news, including further casting, should be announced shortly now that the project is officially moving forward. There will be plenty of people waiting to see if they redo the whole rollercoaster scene with The Sundays' cover of the Rolling Stones song "Wild Horses," or if Nicole's best friend Margot, who was played by Alyssa Milano in the original movie, has a creepy relationship with an older man and does questionable drugs with him. We'll just have to wait and see. Deadline was the first to reveal the Fear remake news.
