All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi retained the Hyderabad parliamentary seat for the fourth consecutive time by a huge margin. AIMIM has been winning the seat since 1984 and despite the polling percentage turning out to be record low this election, Owaisi polled over five lakh votes
Altogether 15 candidates contested from the seat. Owaisi bagged the maximum number of votes from the Bahadurpura assembly segment (1,01,024) where his opponent from BJP, Bhagwant Rao, managed to garner just about 11,490 votes.
And while Rao bagged 83,025 votes from Goshamhal, here Owaisi’s count was limited to 28,275.
As the news of MIM’s victory spread, party workers thronged Owaisi’s residence and at the party headquarters in Darussalam. Some MIM party workers decided to break their Ramzan fast near Owaisi’s residence and later celebrated victory. Iftar arrangement were also made at his residence.
Soon after postal ballots were opened, BJP’s Bhagwant Rao was found leading. In fact, through several rounds in the beginning, it was a close fight between BJP and MIM.
