HYDERABAD: Two big victories for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AMIM) in the Lok Sabha elections in Hyderabad and Aurangabad have raised hopes of the party which is emerging as a key national alternative for Muslims in the country.
Asaduddin Owaisi, won the Hyderabad parliamentary seat by nearly three lakh votes over BJP’s Bhagwant Rao, who secured less than two and a ahld lakh votes. Owaisi now has set his eyes on West Bengal and Assam, where he has promised to fight next.

For the first time, AMIM decided to contest outside its traditional stronghold of Hyderabad, and make forays in Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Kishanganj in Bihar. Known traditionally as a family-run party, ever since AMIM first won the Hyderabad parliamentary seat in 1984, many political pundits scoffed at the idea, citing examples of how MIM fizzled out after tasting initial success.
But after its Aurangabad candidate, Syed Imtiaz Jaleel, won by 4492 votes, defeating the sitting Shiv Sena MP Chandrakant Khaire, who polled 383818 votes, Owaisi says the party is ready to storm into other states.
“What happened to the allegations now of MIM being a B-team and benefitting BJP? You can see the verdict, and now I will concentrate more on Uttar Pradesh. I will now make inroads in West Bengal, Assam and everywhere, without any hesitation,” Owaisi told TOI.
Owasi also said he was very overwhelmed at the votes the party garnered in Kishanganj, Bihar. AMIM candidate Akhtarul Iman polled 295029 votes and came third
