The lead of Mr. Thirunavukkarasar kept soaring right from the first round of counting. Mr. Thirunavukkarasar polled 6,21,285 votes against 1,61,999 by Dr. Ilangovan. “The victory margin exceeding 4.5 lakh votes came as a pleasant surprise. The margin was possibly among the best at the State-level,” Mr. Thirunavukkarasar said.

Accompanied by DMK leader K. N. Nehru, the new Tiruchi MP attributed his victory to the active campaigning undertaken by cadre of all DMK-led alliance partners.
