India's Most Wanted morning shows cancelled because of PM Narendra Modi biopic?
In the box office battle between India's Most Wanted and PM Narendra Modi biopic, Arjun Kapoor's film did not have any morning show on the first day of its release.
"Clash jaisa kuch nahi hota," Arjun Kapoor recently claimed during the press conference of India's Most Wanted, when he was asked about the box office battle between his film and PM Narendra Modi biopic. However, starting from today, the audience might find it hard to choose between the two big films running in theatres, especially after the result of the Lok Sabha election.
Shows of Vivek Oberoi's film, which releases today, began as early as 9 am. On the other hand, India's Most Wanted did not get any morning shows at the multiplexes on Friday. This has led to many people wondering if the delay was to avoid low footfall because of the clash with the PM Narendra Modi biopic.
According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Fox Star Studios (a production and distribution company) had spoken to the national multiplex chains - PVR, INOX, Cinepolis - to avoid all early morning shows.
"Our audience will only venture to the theatres towards the evening and taking into consideration the high overhead costs for theatre owners, we didn't think it is wise to run the morning shows with minimal attendance. We are concentrating shows post noon and towards evening and night. The two-hour runtime will also enable us to get more shows despite the delayed start," revealed a source close to the development.
This was later confirmed to the newspaper by PVR cinemas.
When asked why the move is limited to only the national multiplex chains, the source told the newspaper that it has been targeted to 1100 screens release and will be showcased primarily at multiplexes and limited single screens.
It was earlier speculated that the makers of Arjun Kapoor-starrer India's Most Wanted might shift their dates to avert the clash with Vivek Oberoi's film PM Narendra Modi. However, they still decided to go ahead with May 24.
Earlier, when Arjun Kapoor was asked if his film's business will be affected by the release of the PM Narendra Modi biopic on the same day, he told IndiaToday.in that people don't run to theatres on Friday morning. They first read reviews, talk to people and then go to watch a film.
"The films which release at the box office - be it English, Hindi or regional - they all tend to work because now, our audience is pretty intelligent, calm and sorted. Nobody runs to theatres on Friday morning. You read reviews and speak to people. Then you watch the film," he told us.
Talking about the box office clash, he said, "I think ye ek sensational word hai, clash-vlash aisa kuch nahi hota aaj kal. (I think clash is a sensational word, there is nothing like that nowadays)."
India's Most Wanted, which stars Arjun Kapoor in the lead role, is based on the hunt for a deadly terrorist, rumoured to be Yasin Bhatkal. On the other hand, PM Narendra Modi biopic is based on the journey of our incumbent prime minister, who is set to return for a second term.
