A bride-to-be would have died in an instant and felt 'no pain' when she was mowed down by a van during the London Bridge attack, an inquest heard.

Christine Archibald, 30, was struck seconds after she kissed her fiance Tyler Ferguson and told him she loved him on June 3 2017.

Every rib in her body was broken when the killers' rented Renault Master ploughed into her at up to 34mph and shunted her along the bridge for several metres.

The Canadian social worker, who was visiting her partner in the UK, was left lying naked in the road after her black dress was torn off by the vehicle's wheels.

As the 'barbarian' ISIS fanatics sped away in the 2.5-tonne van, Mr Ferguson rushed to her aid and quickly realised she was dead.

Gareth Patterson QC, for her family, asked an expert how much pain she would have suffered at the Old Bailey today.

Pathologist Dr Ashley Fegan-Earl, who carried out a post-mortem, said: "Immediately she would have been unconscious.'

"I can say that with some confidence."

Mr Patterson asked: "So one thing her family can take from your evidence is there would not have been significant pain."

Dr Fegan-Earl replied: "Yes, they can."

Describing the 'significant, critical and fatal injury', the doctor said one of Ms Achibald's major arteries was torn near her heart and cut in two lower down her spine.

He added: "She died as a consequence of an act of terrorism.

"In my view the injuries demonstrated were wholly consistent with vehicular impact.

"The injuries themselves are indicative of a high-energy impact and are devastating.

"Death would have been near-instantaneous.

"No medical treatment that could have saved her life, however early that was provided."

Jonathan Hough QC, for the coroner, asked: "Is it your opinion she wouldn't have suffered in any way?"

Dr Fegan-Earl said: "It is.

"It wouldn't matter if a full operating theatre were present.

"She could not be saved, given the extent of her injury."

Ms Archibald, from British Columbia in Canada, had worked in a homeless shelter before moving to Europe.

Her family previously said: "She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death."

Terrorists Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, were shot dead by police less than 10 minutes after their attack began.

Ms Archibald, Xavier Thomas, 45, S bastien Belanger, 36, Kirsty Boden, 28, James McMullan, 32, Sara Zelenak, 21, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39, were killed in the attack.

The inquest continues.
