KOLKATA:
Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday met representatives of
Kalighat temple committee to expedite the beautification of Kalighat temple.
According to plans, the KMC civil engineering department has constructed rows of stalls outside the temple complex to shift hawkers from inside the temple complex.
Once the hawkers are shifted to these newly constructed space, the KMC will start the beautification work.
After completion of the work, they will return to their original space.
“I have asked the temple committee to ensure shifting of the stalls by end of June so that the beautification work could be started from early July,” Hakim said.
During the day Hakim also held a meeting with hawker union leaders of Kalighat area for a smooth construction of skywalk in the area that will connect Kalighat temple.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been doing a survey on the underground utilities in Kalighat area before taking up the construction of the skywalk that will resemble Dakshineswar skywalk. Hakim said he had already requested hawkers of Kalighat area to shift to a KMC land adjacent to a water booster pumping station opposite to the land where their stalls are located now.
“We need the land for the time being for construction of the skywalk but will help setting up a hawkers’ market with all infrastructure that will look like a shopping mall,” Hakim said.
