Disgraced Baylor coach Art Briles hired by Texas high school

Art Briles’ next gig will be coaching high schoolers.

The disgraced former Baylor football coach landed a job as a head coach at Mount Vernon High School in Texas, the school announced Friday. Briles agreed to a two-year contract to coach at the school, located about 90 miles northeast of Dallas.

Baylor fired the 63-year-old in 2016 amid a series of sexual assault scandals, which Briles reportedly attempted to cover up. The university’s president, Ken Starr, was also forced to step down over his administration’s handling of the scandal.

“We are pleased to welcome Coach Briles back home to Texas,” Mount Vernon ISD superintendent Jason McCullough said in a statement. “He brings with him a wealth of not only football experience but also life experience. He is passionate about investing in the lives of young people and helping them to succeed both on the field and in life.”

Briles struggled to find work after being dismissed at Baylor, where he went 65-37 over eight seasons.

In February, Briles was interviewed for an offensive coordinator job by Southern Mississippi coach Jay Hopson before the school’s athletic director decided against hiring him. And Briles was hired and quickly dismissed in 2017 as an assistant by the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats after the team faced public backlash.

Briles had also been considered for a job with the Dallas Cowboys and a coaching vacancy at Waco High School. He previously served as the head coach at Houston and began his career as a high school coach in Texas.

He most recently spent a season as the head coach of the Guelfi Firenze American Football team in Florence, Italy.
