NDA parties formally elect Narendra Modi as its leader
Two days after the BJP-led NDA got an overwhelming majority in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the newly-elected MPs of the NDA today formally elected Narendra Modi as their parliamentary party leader. President Ram Nath kovind has invited PM Narendra Modi to form government after the NDA constituent parties handed over letters of support to the president.
A delegation of BJP leaders and its allies called on the President and conveyed to him their choice of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. Letters of support from NDA constituent parties were also handed over to the President.

The President has also requested Narendra Modi to advise him about the names of others to be appointed members of the Union Council of Ministers; and indicate the date and time of the swearing-in-ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Addressing the new parliamentarians, Narendra Modi thanked all NDA members for endorsing him as the leader of coalition and Prime Minister of India.

Speaking on India's democratic traditions and the unique opportunities it presents, Modi said "Lure of power does not influence India's voters." He went on to say that the 2019 election was more of a movement and was successful in bridging barriers between citizens.

Speaking on minorities, Modi said "It is said that politics creates walls, differences, but the 2019 election has broken down those walls. This election has worked to unite people. It was an exercise at social unity."

“It is said that politics creates walls, differences, but the 2019 election has broken down those walls. This election has worked to unite people. It was an exercise at social unity,” he said.

Modi also asked NDA leaders to maintain restraint in speaking to media, adding that some statements made for publicity often trouble the party.

Reflecting on the mandate, Modi added that such a verdict adds responsibility on the winning party and the elected members. Pro-incumbency wave was a reflection of people's trust and their their commitment towards our government.

This election is also historic primarily due to the increase in women voters and the renewed number of women parliamentarians, reiterated Modi.

The Election Commission called on President Ram Nath Kovind and handed over the list of 542 newly-elected members of the Lok Sabha. This will enable the president to initiate the process of government formation.

The BJP has secured majority on its own in the elections by winning 303 seats. Elections were held in 542 of the 543 seats. The election in Vellore Lok Sabha seat was cancelled by the EC citing abuse of money power.
