Bloomberg Elite Society leads cleanup drive at Kiphire

After declaring Kiphire town as the ‘plastic free town’ and taking the campaign forward against the use of polythene bags and plastic use, students, volunteers and environmental activist actively participated in the Himalayan Cleanup campaign despite of heavy down pour of rain. The cleanup drive was conducted along the NH 202 road from District Hospital Kiphire to Tuensang road organized by Bloomberg Elite Society, Kiphire on May 25.

Speaking at the campaign, SDO Nympeo Wallin Kiphire lauded the Bloomberg Elite Society for organising such a noble campaign stating that as a Christian, as human beings, as spiritual beings, it is our responsibility to take care  of our environment. Urging the gathering to make it one's daily practice to avoid from using polythene bags and plastic, SDO said “we will live on earth only for a short time, so as much as possible, we should preserve our environment for the next generation. We have to all renew and pledge to conserve our fast depleting environment just like our previous generation preserve it for us today,” the SDO stated. 

SDO also pointed out that today with the rampant use of plastic the world has become so polluted, so if we don't take care of our environment now in few decades time, it will be difficult for human beings to even exist on this earth. 

Asking the citizens to carry forward the campaign SDO stated that as Kiphire has been declared as the plastic free town it is the responsibility of all to preserve the pristine environment before it is too late. 

The collected polythene bags and plastic waste was later segregated into different categories as per the brand and audited. As per the audited report 327 kg of was collected while the leading number one polluter was PET  bottles which include Water/Soft drink and Juice bottles, around  27 kg was collected. 

To do away the use of polythene bags and plastic, district administration Kiphire in collaboration with Kiphire District Chambers of Commerce has banned the use of plastic since January this year and has introduce eco-friendly bio-degradable bags and will be introducing Vermicompost segregation plant shortly in all wards in Kiphire Town.  

Dumping of waste just above might Zunki River, which is the tributary of Chinwin River has been a matter of environmental concern for some time now, as it was affecting aquatic life's in river. However with the initiative taken by citizens to address the environment pollution and good waste management system Kiphire environment is expected to improve.
