Indian Pres. invites Modi to form new gov't after general elections


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, May 25 (KUN A) -- Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday invited former Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form the next government after his re-election as Prime Minister of India.
The President's Office said in a Press Communique that President Kovind appointed Modi to the office of the PM and requested to advise him about the names of others to be appointed as members of the union council of ministers and indicate the date and time of the swearing-in-ceremony.
The move came in wake of the announcement of 17th Indian Parliament Elections in which the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got a thumping majority.
In an earlier statement, the President's Office said that he has accepted decision of the Cabinet meeting held on Friday to dissolve the 16th Lok Sabha with immediate effect.
An NDA delegation led by BJP President Amit Shah BJP and several senior leaders in attendance called on the president at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier today and handed over a letter stating that Modi has been elected leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party.
The right-wing party of former premier Modi achieved landslide victory as it bagged 302 seats out of 543 in the Parliamentary Elections giving it the majority needed to form the next government while the major opposition Congress party got just 52 seats.
Around 67 percent of the 900 million Indian eligible voters cast their votes in the seven-phase Parliamentary Elections starting from April 11 to May 19 which is billed to be the largest voting exercise in the world. (end)
