A stone quarry operator, M. Maria Selvakumar, 53, was hacked to death by armed men at Tiruchuli on Saturday night.
The police said that the deceased was returning home on foot after shopping at Main Bazaar when he was intercepted by two persons riding on a motorbike at around 8.30 p.m.
Suddenly, the duo started assaulting him with lethal weapons. The incident took place on Middle Street near the Sub-Registrar office, the police said. After leaving him in a pool of blood, the duo escaped.
The police identified two suspects. They said that two persons had broken the wind shield of Selvakumar’s car a year ago under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile, the duo had learnt that Selvakumar was attempting to assault them with the help of a local man. After frequent quarrels over the months, there was another quarrel last week too.
The wife of the deceased lodged a complaint with the police claiming that her husband had expressed fear for his life as he was being targeted by someone.
The Tiruchuli police are on the lookout for the perpetrators of the crime. The body was handed over to the family members on Sunday after post mortem.
The incident that occurred at a stone throwing distance from the Tiruchuli police station created tense moments.
