Preston midfielder Alan Browne is out of the Republic of Ireland’s UEFA EURO 2020 qualifiers with Denmark and Gibraltar

The 24-year-old, from Cork, has been released by manager Mick McCarthy after picking up a calf injury in training.

The decision was taken following a scan in Portugal where the Irish team are currently training at The Campus at Quinta Do Lago.

Browne will begin his recovery programme in camp and will fly home from the Algarve with the Irish squad on Tuesday.

“Alan has been very unlucky with injuries this season,” said McCarthy. “An ankle injury kept him out of the two games in March and now this calf problem has ruled him out of the matches against Gibraltar and Denmark.”

McCarthy has confirmed to FAI.ie that he has no plans to add to his squad after the injury blow to the Preston North End midfielder.

Assessing his international career to date, before news of the injury, Browne said: “It's a difficult one because they were friendlies and there's always a lot of new faces in the teams.

“There's a bit of inexperience from everyone. It was a learning curve but I’ve taken a lot away from it.

“I wouldn't say I froze, but probably just a bit of naivety. You want to take how you've been playing at club level into international level and you're eager.

“But you're not going to be able to play as well in that step-up with players you don't play with week-in, week-out, so you have to adapt your game to a certain degree.

“The quicker you realise that, the better you're going to play. But I don't think my time at international level has been great so far.

“Every game you play at international level is really tough and I soon found that out. But I take it as a good thing, the pressure of international football.

“It gets to some players, but for me personally anyway, I don't really see it as a negative.

"When the international breaks come, I always seem to get injured, but I'm raring to go.”
