BEGUSARAI/PATNA: A BJP functionary was killed in Begusarai late Thursday night. The incident happened close on the heels of kidnapping and murder of a CPI supporter and an attempt to murder a person from minority community in hate crime in the district since the Lok Sabha election results were announced on May 23.
Gopal Singh was sleeping in his outhouse at Amraur under Singhaul police outpost when the criminals attacked him.
The incident came to light around 4am on Friday when the Gopal’s mother found him lying in a pool of blood. She raised an alarm and the residents reached there and informed the police.
Begusarai SP Awakash Kumar said on Friday Gopal was hit with some blunt substance and received grievous injuries on his head. He died on the spot. “There was no evidence of any protest, which suggested that he was attacked while asleep,” he added.
Locals said Gopal, who was BJP’s Amraur Kiratpur panchayat chief, had actively campaigned for Giriraj Singh in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Giriraj won from Begusarai by defeating Kanhaiya Kumar of CPI.
SDPO Rajan Sinha said the motive behind the murder of Gopal, a farmer by profession, is yet to be ascertained. SHO Manish Kumar said the body had been sent to the sadar hospital for postmortem.
Agitated over the incident, a group of residents blocked the NH-31 near Angareji Dhala for over two hours. The protesters were pacified and the road blockade was lifted after the SP assured them to arrest the culprits at the earliest.

A local resident said, “We tried to contact our newly elected MP (now minister in the Modi-2 cabinet) over phone but in vain.” Giriraj was in Delhi to take oath as cabinet minister on Thursday.
Earlier, a CPI supporter, Fago Tanti (60), was kidnapped and subsequently killed in Begusarai’s Matihani police station area. CPI secretary Anil Kumar Anjan had described the incident as a fallout of political rivalry.
On May 26, one Mohammad Quasim, a petty trader, was shot at and critically injured when one Ravi Yadav opened fire at him in Kumbhi village under the Cheria Beriyarpur police station area of the district. Quasim had reportedly said the assailant fired at him after ascertaining his identity and told him to go to Pakistan.
“The law and order situation has touched its nadir in Begusarai in particular and in the state in general. However, the top police officers claim that everything was quite under control in the state,” said CPI state secretary Satya Narayan Singh.
