PATNA: Armed robbers looted a little over Rs 8 lakh in cash from the collection agent of a private firm at Jamui on Monday, close on the heels of loot of a mobile phone from a woman near the official residence of the superintendent of police.
The incident took place around 1.15 pm when Lalit Singh, an employee of a private firm, was on way to deposit the money in the State Bank of India (SBI).
Four miscreants on two bikes intercepted Lalit near Tripurari Lane under the Town police station area and snatched the bag containing money.
One of them fired at Lalit when he offered resistance. However, the bullet missed the target and hit the wall of a nearby building. Lalit immediately informed the employers about the incident over phone.
Jamui Town police station SHO S Ram said that an empty cartridge has been recovered from the spot. A complaint has been launched on Lalit’s statement and raids are on to nab the robbers.
Lalit used to collect money from a shopping mall and later deposited the same in a bank on his bicycle. “We are preparing the sketches of the suspects on the basis of details shared by the victim,” the SHO said.
Earlier, an anganbari sevika Maya Devi was robbed of her mobile phone near the SP’s residence in broad daylight. The incident took place when the victim was on way to her office after alighting from a two-wheeler.
A police constable deputed at the SP’s residence said that he came to know about the incident after the woman raised an alarm. She tried to catch hold of the robber but in vain. Later she informed the officials of her department, who, in turn, suggested her to lodge a police complaint.
About a week ago, a similar incident had happened with a woman when she was going for shopping in the town after alighting from an autorickshaw. Though the victim raised an alarm, the robbers managed to escape with her mobile phone.
“The district administration recently installed CCTVs at some places in the town. But they have failed to work as deterrent to the criminals,” lamented Gopal Prasad, a staff of a Jamui women’s college. Prasad was robbed of Rs.90,000 in cash at gun-point.
