Molested, woman sets self ablaze in Firozabad district

AGRA: A 25-year-old woman set herself ablaze on Tuesday morning after being allegedly molested by two men in Firozabad district.
A resident of Nagla Gadi Bhau village under Nagla Singhi police jurisdiction, the woman suffered 90 % burns, She has been admitted in S N Medical College of Agra, where she is battling for life.
According to written complaint by her husband, “Sita (name changed) was upset after the accused men barged into our house at around 8 am on Tuesday and assaulted family members for complaining to local police about the molestation.”
He said, “Sita was abused and threatened of gangrape if the complaint was not withdrawn.Unable to bear the mental and physical torture, she poured kerosene over herself and set herself ablaze.” The complaint mentions names of five men responsible for abatement of suicide. They are all neighbours.
Mukesh Dhama, a senior BJP leader of Tundla, who helped the family lodge case of molestation, said, “On Sunday evening, when Sita went out to the fields, a group of men groped and molested her. The victim gave a written complaint to police on Monday but no FIR was lodged. On Tuesday, after she set herself ablaze, the local police lodged an FIR in half an hour but against only two men.”
He said, “The local police failed to execute their duty. A thorough probe must be done.”
Meanwhile speaking with TOI, superintendent of police (city), Prabal Pratap Singh said, “The woman was molested and taking cognizance of the incident, local police voluntarily lodged an FIR under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) against two men identified as Ramu alias Bohare and another unidentified person. The woman’s family was not ready to lodge an FIR and probably due to resentment over lack of support by her own family, she set herself ablaze. We have taken the woman’s statement. Meanwhile, the local police are conducting raids to apprehend the accused involved in molestation bid. We will further add abatement to suicide section in the FIR during probe.”
