PATNA: Tension ran high at Bhagwanpur in Kaimur district on Wednesday following the death of a 17-year-old girl, prompting the police to detain one of the two suspects belonging to minority community.
The victim’s family members alleged that she was raped and subsequently poisoned to death by two youths, a charge denied by the police. The girl had left her house at Nibi village under Bhagwanpur police station around 2 pm on Tuesday to withdraw money from a local bank.
However, two hours later the girl’s elder sister received a call on her mobile phone from one Ejaz Ansari alias Sonu that she was serious.
When the family members rushed to a private hospital at Bhabhua, the district headquarters of Kaimur, they found the girl lying in an unconscious state. She was later taken to a Chandauli-based hospital in Uttar Pradesh for better treatment. However, the doctors referred her to a government hospital at Varanasi. She died on way to the hospital.
The victim’s family said two youths belonging to a neighbouring village had conspired to kill her. “She was poisoned to death after being raped,” alleged the deceased’s elder brother. The deceased’s father, Bahadur Yadav, who works at a private firm in Mumbai, was not present at his native village when the incident happened.
Bhagwanpur police statation SHO Rakesh Kumar Raushan denied the allegation. “The postmortem report doesn’t confirm rape which was conducted under the supervision of a medical board headed by the civil surgeon,” the SHO said.
He said the body was handed over to the family after postmortem. However, it was later sent to Varanasi for cremation under police protection due to tension in the village. One of the two youths identified as Sais Ali, who accompanied the girl to the bank, has been detained for interrogation.

Police also said that the girl was in constant touch with her fiancé. “This has been established by the call detail records (CDR) of the cell phone of the deceased,” an investigating officer said.
The locals, who were agitated over the incident, reportedly made an abortive attempt to damage the house of the suspect at nearby Asawan village dominated by people belonging to minority community. The situation was, however, brought under control due to the intervention of the panchayat mukhiya, who informed the senior police officials about the incident around 2 am on Wednesday.
“We have deployed additional police force in the area as a precautionary measure. Patrolling has been intensified and the locals have been warned of stern action for taking law into their hands,” Bhagwanpur SHO said, adding that prima facie the incident appeared to be a fall out of love affair.
Kaimur SP Dilnawaz Ahmad said that the accused involved in abetting the girl for taking the extreme step wouldn’t be spared. The victim’s viscera has also been preserved.
