Cops come under siege in Cooch Behar
Kolkata: Several thousand BJP supporters had surrounded Ghokshadanga police station in Cooch Behar in north Bengal till late on Thursday after police allegedly picked up 60 party workers for their alleged involvement in assaulting a Trinamool leader in the area earlier in the day.
Police said the protesters were hurling bricks and empty cold-drinks bottles at the police station as officers locked the gate and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd but in vain.
Till last reports came in, police had taken shelter inside the station awaiting a larger force from Cooch Behar town, around 60km away.
In Barasat’s Bijahari Das Colony, near the North 24 Parganas SP’s office, a clash broke out between BJP and Trinamool workers on Thursday night. At least six cops were injured in trying to disperse the mob.
