Two workers sustained serious burn injuries following an explosion at an illegal cracker unit near Vembakottai near here on Sunday.

The police identified the injured as S. Solairaj, 37, and A. Ganesan, 47, of Bose Colony in Sivakasi.

The police said that the building at Peranaickenpatti was a unit making raw materials for cracker industry. However, after its licencee, R. Subburaj, 55, failed to renew the licence a few years ago, it was turned into an illegal unit for making crackers by some people.

On Sunday, when the duo were making crackers, friction was said to have caused the accident. The injured were rushed to the Government Hospital at Sattur. Later, they were referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

The Vembakottai police are investigating.
