The North Eastern Council has released Rs 11 crore for the construction of a hostel for northeastern students in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus. The tendering by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is under process.
The details were discussed by the officials of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and North Eastern Council (NEC) in a review meeting held on June 3, 2019.

The four-storey hostel will have 224 rooms to accommodate students. Out of the 224 rooms, 24 will be reserved for students with disabilities. “This hostel is funded by the North East Council under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region to create 440 additional living spaces across the campus in all hostels for students coming from North East India. These 440 living spaces across the campus will be given to these students on priority,” says M Jagadesh Kumar, vice chancellor of JNU.
“In our university, we do not place the students in the hostels region-wise. In JNU, we have students from across India and overseas, they learn and live together to make our campus highly cosmopolitan,” he adds.
The construction work will start in the coming weeks and is expected to complete by 2021. This will offer more residential space for students in the academic session 2021-22. “We have received all the required permissions for the construction of the hostel. Such big construction projects typically take a long time and we are expecting it to be functional in about 18 months,” adds Kumar.
Highlighting the increasing demand for hostels due to additions in the list of courses offered by JNU, Kumar says, “Since we are expanding our academic programmes, the demand for more hostel accommodation will continue to be on a rise. We are working on raising funds for the construction of more accommodation, which will allow more students to reside on campus.”
